Vandals destroy religious statues at Bay Ridge's Visitation Academy

The Brooklyn Paper

A band of blasphemers desecrated several statues on the monastery grounds of Visitation Academy in Bay Ridge, even going so far as to behead the likeness of a helpless lamb.

The statues, arranged in positions of prayer around a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, were knocked off their pedestals overnight on Wednesday — and two of them were dragged away.

“Of course I’m hurt,” said the monastery’s superior, Mother Pauline, who found out about the vandalism from a worshipper attending Mass. “By the time I got out there, the police were already here.”

Cops say the weight of the stone figurines means several people were likely involved in the crime, which comes a month into the Lenten season.

Investigators suspect the sacrilege on the grounds of the Catholic girls’ school was intended as a prank, not as any kind of anti-religious gesture.

As police scoured the scene and gathered evidence — including the lamb’s severed head — they recovered a glass candle and a bottle of Guinness that will be checked for fingerprints and DNA evidence, NYPD sources said.

The crime outraged Councilman Vincent Gentile (D–Bay Ridge), who called the vandalism cowardly and despicable and promised the monastery assistance in restoring the statues.

State Senator Marty Golden (R–Bay Ridge) has put up a $1,000 reward for anyone able help capture the crooks, saying the vandalism at Visitation is “a direct attack on the values and teachings of the Catholic Church.”

The mother superior said she has no idea who would have been behind the act of impiety, since the monastery has had no problem with vandalism before.

She declined to say if the monastery would press charges against the vandals if they were caught or forgive the sinners.

“We’ll let the police handle it,” she said.

The statue attack comes months after metal-loving graffiti writers scribbled KISS-style makeup on sculptures of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus outside of a Williamsburg house of worship.

Police said they were searching for a KISS fan, but no cops have made no arrests.

Beheading?

Sounds like a hate crime from the religion of peace!

@WW
my thoughts exactly. everyone in the area knows exactly who is responsible for 99.9% of the crime in Bayridge, or rather Bay-ruit, but it's not PC to take action, discuss it, or even point it out. guess we'll to keep ignoring the big elephant in the room...

Everybody reading this who doesn't live in Bay Ridge: WW and Celt above unfortunately are perfect representations of what so many people in Bay Ridge are actually like.

Imagine a stereotypical backwoods redneck. Now put a stupid gold chain around his neck and put a pound of gel in his hair and get him to say '——outtaheah' at the end of every inane sentence. Ah, my hood.

The perpetrators of this type of vandalism are likely 20 something yr. old drunks who wandered off course after a night of boozing on 3rd ave. As for Ahab above, it sounds like he has some deeper issues to deal with as he comes to grips with his own apparent xenophobia against a segment of Bay Ridge populace. I have lived here all my life and never heard that expression used in the context outlined above.
Get Better Ahab.

Surveillence cameras and motion detectors would help. Pray they get caught or turn themselves in.

I would rather see them serve punishment on earth than in the next life. It would probably be much worse in the next.

Matt. 5:26,18:34; Luke 12:58-59 – Jesus teaches us, “Come to terms with your opponent or you will be handed over to the judge and thrown into prison. You will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” The word “opponent” (antidiko) is likely a reference to the devil (see the same word for devil in 1 Pet. 5:8) who is an accuser against man (c.f. Job 1.6-12; Zech. 3.1; Rev. 12.10), and God is the judge. If we have not adequately dealt with satan and sin in this life, we will be held in a temporary state called a prison, and we won’t get out until we have satisfied our entire debt to God. This “prison” is purgatory where we will not get out until the last penny is paid.

@Ahab
so rednecks wear gel and gold chains? if you say so...
don't even try to deny who is responsible for all the crime in the area. That is all that i was pointing out. Racist trash comes in all colours and you prove that point with your anti-white racial slurs. You and your buddies are a perfect example of why the quality of life in the area has significantly declined over the past 10 years. and as BB says, "If you dont like it then get the **** out.."

What I find super offensive is reducing this to a childrens rhyme - mary had a little lamb - how about allah had a cow or Hymie had a hernia - always OK to make fun of Christianity and the RC'sin particular

Cat from Bay Ridge says:
An act of vandalism against any religious symbol is disrespectful and atrocious. Can we agree on that or do we have to demand 'even steven' by suggesting similar acts on 'Hymie' and 'allah'?

I don't think one can argue that RCs get disproportionately maligned, impugned or made "fun of". Do I take it that you all think It's ok to throw bombs into a synagogue and burn a rabbi's home endangering his children (recently done in NJ)?

Religions in general are under attack- and by the most "religious". I wonder why?

This is awful and whoever did it should be punished, but not because it's 'us against them', but because it's just plain wrong.

A lifelong Catholic.

At this point it doesn't really matter if the Muslims did it or the rednecks. The point being is that it is disrespectful and not of god. What's the point in pointing fingers??? It may be a hate crime it may be Santeria. Little and young girls attend that school and they are the innocent bystanders. They don't need to see the evil that lurks out there, in our adult world.They should not be subjected to that kind of behavior. These young girls are our future. I pray for the unfortunate souls that would desecrate those grounds. Only god knows their karma. Let's not feed anymore negative energy. We are the creators of our world. Hate Hate= more hate. Justice will be served wether it is today or tomorrow. Let's pray for a better quality of life in our neighbor hood.

John from Bay Ridge says:
It is interesting how a crime against private property is turned into this charade. The fact is that some Homo habilis whether intoxicated or not destroyed private property (it does not matter whether you believe that it is sacred or not). These sub-humans need to be prosecuted of the crime. The racist accusations above are simply the result of intellectually challenged people that feel threaten by others that are perhaps intellectually superior. Finally, if you knew what Santeria really was and who practice it you will realized that this will not be part of it at all, so educate yourself before revealing your true I.Q.
