Today’s news:

Sticky situation! Anti-bike vigilante is gluing locks in Williamsburg

The Brooklyn Paper

No bicycle in Williamsburg is safe.

A longtime neighborhood resident has gotten so frustrated by sidewalks packed with parked bicycles that he has actually begun injecting Krazy Glue into locks as a form of vigilante injustice.

The renegade — whose name has been concealed because of the sensitive nature of this story — has committed the crime a few times, but told us last week that there are plans to broaden the sticky situation.

“If I get the right people together, we will go down Bedford Avenue at 4 am and inject every bike lock on the strip with Krazy Glue,” said the vigilante, whom we’re calling “The Bike Crusader.”

“There is a bike crisis. Every pole in the neighborhood is littered with them. … These Yuppies are running the whole damn city, and I’m left to my own devices.”

The Crusader’s beef rests with the bikers and the city officials who “allow them into the neighborhood.” The city’s move to widen the sidewalks at N. Seventh Street and Bedford Avenue to make way for bike parking, the U-shaped bike racks lining the sidewalks, and the “failure” by cops to remove bikes locked to city-owned signage left the Crusader stewing in a pot of anger.

That resentment eventually drove the Crusader Krazy.

The sidewalk on Bedford Avenue and the surrounding streets is indeed filled with chained-up bikes, especially near train lines like the L at N. Seventh Street. Locking a bike on a city-provided racks is legal, but locking a bike to any other post, like a parking sign or bus stop sign, is not. And that, plus the handful of bikes that appear to be abandoned, has the Crusader railing.

“We need to clear the sidewalk for people in wheelchairs and people getting out of cars,” the Crusader said, adding that the vigilante “never wanted to turn to this,” but “the Yuppies … have turned this beautiful neighborhood into an eyesore. Watch out for your locks.”

Naturally, bike enthusiasts aren’t so enthused by the threats. Activist Baruch Herzfeld — owner of the Traif Bike Gesheft shop in the neighborhood — doesn’t deny that bikes are left outside from time to time, but noted that the removal (or destruction) of loitering bikes is up to the Department of Sanitation.

“We can understand the frustration, but I cannot support destruction — it’s never a positive thing,” Herzfeld said. “How will people get their bikes off the street? This person is making the problem, and the discourse, worse. It’s unfortunate.”

Vandalism is a misdemeanor and punishable by fines or jail time if the offense is deemed severe by a judge. Still, the Bike Crusader claims that the vandalism is an act of enforcement, rather than vigilantism.

“The people in this community are tired of bikes crowding the sidewalks for two, three weeks at a time, blocking the walkways,” the Crusader said. “No bike is safe.”

Won't that just make people buy new bikes and lock them to the krazy glued ones? Then there will be MORE bikes not less...

Mike from GP says:
"but locking a bike to any other post, like a parking sign or bus stop sign, is not." This is claimed a lot, but is in fact debatable.

Overall, this criminal suffers from the same delusions that many anti-bicyclists do -- years of abuse by a car-dominated society has led them to identify with car drivers, and strike out at their natural allies -- bicyclists. This is evidenced by their complaints that bikes are "eyesores", ignoring the fact that cars are eyesores.

Hopefully this person will be arrested, and will learn a few lessons: 1) You broke the law and will be punished, and 2) You are deluded in regards to bikes.

glue all of the bikes. its true the yuppies take over everything. closing prospect park was not good enough, they had to have bike lanes on the parkside too. enough already. if its not one thing its another. i applaud you. glue away, you will be the hero of bedford ave.

JackESavage from LESWilliamsburg says:
This well-intentioned but misinformed activist has his compass all wrong, but he's got the right anti-consumerist spirit. The "Yuppies" aren't the WB residents riding bikes; they're the ones speeding Toyota SUV Hybrids and Land Rovers throughout Williamsburg, honking at elderly pedestrians when they're made to wait at intersections. These idiots also honk at cyclists, and do their best to run them off the road, when they can, whether intentionally, or due to negligence, since they're always braying into their iPhones.
Those riding bikes are, most likely, artists and writers who long to preserve the vanishing aesthetic of '80s-era WB, who loathe cars, and who celebrate the neighborhood for what it was.
Those spoiled morons moving into multi-million dollar penthouses overlooking the East River are the true enemies of the neighborhood's history and character. Why doesn't Glue Gun Hero redirect some of his melted-horseshoe ire at those 'Alt-Bros' who have been moving into his or her nabe en masse, in order to render the neighborhood a "24 Hour Party People" Paradise

Vandalism is a crime, and this man has no business deciding which bikes are parked correctly and which aren't.
He has to deal with his wild control issues.

Anyway - I can't imagine why you would live in Willimasburg if you don't like yuppies - it's yuppie central.

this guys an idiot. How does preventing the bike from being moved, solve or do anything for the bike parking problem. Plus, i've never seen a yuppie riding one of those bikes that are chained to the posts over there. Even better, is he tells a newspaper article, when and where he glues people's bike locks making it easier to be caught. Please do a follow up article on this retard when he gets caught at 4AM, I need a good laugh these days.

I bet you $10 this guy works for the hardware store down the street and sells bolt cutters.

Ian Turner from Long Island City says:
This article is irresponsible. This kind of publicity is exactly what this criminal wants. Calling him a "vigilante" is just wrong, since he's not avenging any broken laws. Rather, this person is just a vandal, plain and simple.

Chris from East Village says:
I guess this a-hole doesn't care much about the neighborhood's survival, because as long as he's still out there, I won't be biking to Williamsburg anymore. I can't afford to buy a new lock.

Shame on The Brooklyn Paper for protecting a criminal for a petty little story like this.

Tom from Williamsburg says:
Hopefully it could be a good thing and will make the city realize that it needs more parking for Bikes. Possibly finally take away 1 or 2 car parking spaces to make room for around 20-30 bike parking spots. I also agree with the guy that too many people leave old abandoned bikes around or have a bike, park it outside and just never use it. At the end of the day though its obvious that this guy is a total —— and is not intelligent enough to realize that there are way better, less destructive and more productive ways to deal with that anger and this problem of there not being enough bike parking around the city.

I Killed Josh! from Noneya says:
All of you on here against the Krazy-glue Hero are some scary bike freaks. Yeah, biking is fun and great exercise but it does not PUT YOU ABOVE EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS CITY just because you ride a bike. YOU MUST EXIST IN AND GET ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER RESIDENTS OF BROOKLYN. Your bikes aren't all that precious. You have no mandate from G-d. IF you don't like it, be more responsible with them. Funny how you wanna talk all this mess about how you bike freaks are saving the environment....but you never EVER EVER address the THOUSANDS of abandoned bikes that POLLUTE Brooklyn....SUCH HYPOCRITES. You treat your bikes like toys in your cribs that you throw down when you are tired of them. Grow up.

All you bike freaks should get together and organize a clean-up or recycling campaign that repairs and distributes these abandoned bikes to people that will use them. You should also respect public space.

Krazy-glue Hero...GO TO IT!!!!!

GLUE ALL THOSE BIKES.

Brilliant idea. Thank you.

Peter from Park Slope says:
This guy is an ass, and the BP shouldn't be defending him. He's freely admitting to destroying $100 locks that don't belong to him. What if he was going around slashing car tires? Would you defend him then?

If he doesn't like bike parking, he can complain to his community board, complain to his local precinct, complain to 311.

Right now, this jerkoff should be arrested.

Adam from Red Hook says:
Right, the north side of Williamsburg really was a "beautiful neighborhood" before "the Yuppies" came in and ruined it. Ask anyone who lived there in the 80s. Maybe if the city were to bring back the blessing of hard drugs that so enhanced the area before, bike theft would accelerate, with a healthy winnowing effect on all those "eyesores."

If the "Crusader" wants fewer bikes in his neighborhood, he shouldn't go around super-gluing locks. He should be handing out crack pipes and bolt cutters.
Aug. 10, 2010, 10:13 am
egit from Boerum Hill says:
I think I'm going to smash the windshield and slash the tires of any car I see parked illegally. Or even any car that I think isn't parked according to my aesthetics. Or, in fact... just any car. Because I don't think cars should be parked on the street.

How's that for logic? This guy's a clown.

Not that I think this shouldn't be reported, but seriously you have to turn this guy over to the police. If someone spots him "at 4am on Bedford" gluing bikes, a U-Lock to the skull region wouldn't be a surprising outcome. The guy's basically stealing private property.

Bikes parked on sidewalks are committing no crimes, so vandalizing them is just plain illegal. This paper shouldn't glorify these crimes or protect this criminal. It's negligent and it's poor journalism.

peter from Prospect Heights says:
There is an easy solution to this problem: remove more car parking spaces on Bedford to widen the sidewalks and make room for more bike racks. That way, jerks like this guy won't have anything to complain about.

dporpentine from Flatbush says:
Brooklyn Paper: as Don said, you're protecting a criminal, not a source.

What's the dollar value of a person's criminality past which you'll protect them? These could easily be hundred-dollar locks. Is that too low for you to bother with? What if I took a dislike to school textbooks and started stealing them from children? I mean, there are good reasons to hate them: the prices are grossly inflated, they're sold using a set of schemes that would make Madoff blush, etc. You'd protect me, right? Right?
Aug. 10, 2010, 10:41 am
Josh says:
Question for Gersh:

If someone got annoyed with the Brooklyn Paper and crazy-glued your office door locks, would you write about them and protect your "source" or would you turn the person in and press charges?

Oli from BK says:
Best thing about all this? It doesn't matter if "The Bike Crusader" even does what is described in the story (or if he even exists for the matter). The message got through and I bet people will talk about it and think twice before locking their bikes on Bedford and vicinity.

Idiots FTW!
Aug. 10, 2010, 11 am

I dont understand this guys argument. Basically too many people who can afford to take cars are instead taking bikes? Isn't that a good thing?
Aug. 10, 2010, 11 am

Not to mention, wouldn't gluing the bike locks shut just mean there will be even more bikes crowding the street?

ms nomer from greenpoint says:
I agree, this guy's a vandal. Griping about whatever you want isn't illegal, but vandalizing people's property is. BP, turn him in!

Hope it doesn't happen to anyone else but dousing your glued lock with nail polish remover is cheaper than paying someone to cut your lock and then replacing it with a new one. I'm sorry that it's not an especially eco friendly solution though.

Bike Crusader, take your gripes to the right NYC outlets to deal with bikes that are genuinely locked up in a manner that is dangerous to the public. And Mayor Bloomberg, isn't it time you settled on a citywide policy and process for dealing with abandoned bikes?!

BTW the way to remove crazy glue and save the locks is with acetone---you know it as nail polish remover. Don't try this on a car however as it also removes paint.

Brooklyn Paper should be ashamed of itself for protecting a vandal in exchange for a controversial story sure to get lots of pageviews. I don't agree with this guy;s methods but I understand his madness. I'm primarily a pedestrian and I am sick and tired of the attitudes that cyclists have towards us. You don't own the streets, if your light is red then you need to stop! You should not be biking on sidewalks and you should curb your nasty remarks towards others when you deem them to be in your way. I have had enough of the holier than thou attitude from cyclists; you're riding a bike, not curing cancer! get over yourselves.

Attention anyone who has had their property damaged by this a-hole vigilante: When you sue him for damages, don't forget to add The Brooklyn Paper to your suit, for obstruction of justice, failing to report a crime, and probably half a dozen other misdemeanors. Once again, this paper proves why it's not fit to wipe your ass with.

Get the hell out of here, Crusader. I've lived in your fair neighborhood since 1992 and I'm born and raised in lower Manhattan. My Aunt died and we took over her place that my family has owned since 1918. I ride a bike. You glue my bike lock and I will glue your eyes shut. Why am I gonna be punished for mass interest in bikes? What am I? An early adopter of bikes? I've been riding one since I was 7. You're an idiot. MTA fares going up and so will bikes.

Anyway, if this happens to you, pour acetone, or nail polish remover w/ acetone in the glued lock.
Aug. 10, 2010, 1:05 pm
sarah from bwick says:
Come on, you all know this isn't *really* about bikes - this is another culture war. The reason the vigilante's logic is so flawed is because he's just plain angry that the neighborhood is changing.

This is why most anti-bike people are anti-bike - how else can you explain so much false logic in one movement?

http://www.recycleabicycle.org/

Meanwhile, I've been riding a bike in NYC for over 12 years and it's the best way to get around. Yes, I agree, there are a lot of annoying cyclists around these days--talking on their phones while riding, listening to their iPods in both ears and not paying attention to traffic, riding the wrong way on a one way street, splitting the lane, being drunk and generally clueless while riding.

It's frustrating. Yes. But, surely, it is hundreds of times better than the alternative--Hummers with blue neon lights, terrible Jersey drivers, irresponsible, aggressive taxi drivers, and honking impatient wankers who can't deal with traffic.

People should not leave their bikes alone for days on end. True. I've done it before and it always makes me nervous. But, really, gluing locks is a crime and one of the "petty"-est I've heard of in all of my years. This isn't "The Warriors" "Turf Wars" or any other BK fantasy you are dreaming of, dude. Sorry but your bike freak logic doesn't work here...YOUR CHOICE TO BE A BIKE FREAK DOES NOT MAGICALLY ZAP —— DRIVERS AND MAKE THEM DISAPPEAR. IT DOES NOT MAKE PEOPLE ANY LESS AGGRESSIVE. HAhahahahhahahaaaaaa how stupid. See there's a bike freak for ya.

You may not like those people nor they you. Just because you ride a bike it doesn't make you special or better than a car driver. You have no more or less rights THAN ANYBODY IN THS CITY. LEARN TO GET ALONG WITH EVERYBODY.

Plus if you're that worried about the environment or a carbon foot print, reverting backward to 19th century transportation isn't gonna cut it. It is 100% implausible to think that coverting everybody to bike freaks is going to address *that* problem. Get off you bike and into a science lab and start working on a more viable means of transportation. Even if you're not trained you can easily volunteer.

You may be Brooklyn born and raised but you are still a bike freak. And if you really are Brooklyn born and raised you should be used to traffic by now. If YOU can't hack it, then stay off the road...its probably safer for you in the long run.

Also, it's about time do retire the "bike enthusiast" language.

It's transportation. Enough with the view that everyone on a bicycle is an "enthusiast" or an "activist" or making a statement about something.

You don't refer to drivers as "car enthusiasts" or mass transit riders as "subway enthusiasts."

Most people out there on bikes are just getting from point A to point B, riding to work, riding to a social event, or riding to the store.

Not every bike is part of the problem, a great deal of us lock our bikes up outside in between home and going to/coming from somewhere else. Even if it's 4:00 AM, I could be on my way home, and now I gotta call a locksmith or a cop to assist me? C'mon, dude. What you're doing is dangerous and could get you killed.

Whatever. I'm not riding a bike for any other reason than it's cheap and makes me look better in shorts. I care about the environment greatly, but my "freaky" bike choice is a lot more straightfoward and practical.

I've "hacked" the traffic since way before all these bike lanes even existed. There are just a lot more irresponsible cyclists these days, my comment was just to point out that not all cyclists do take the care they should. Agreed. They make cyclists look bad just like rude, terrible drivers make drivers look bad.

I don't think cyclists have more or less rights than anyone else. Never said I did.

I have no problem "getting along" with most people, my dear. You on the other hand seem quite prickly. Maybe some physical activity would help you handle your stress and anger. It's proven, another great reason to cycle.

I've been a biker in NYC since 1995. It truly is the best way to get around. That said, I also drive.

In the end, we're all ——s. When riding the bike I see plenty of douches riding like ——s. When driving I see plenty of pedestrians and bikers... acting like ——s. Walkers think that they have some goddam right to walk out in front of me in both the car and on the bike.

People on bikes that see me in a car assume I'm someone I'm not. When I'm on a bike both cars and pedestrians act as if I'm not there. Seriously, do you have to stand in the bike lane waiting for a light to change?

Regardless of any one the above, y'all need to learn the definition of yuppie. Williamsburg doesn't have too many yuppies (yet), but it's loaded with fixed gear bikes ridden by... for the lack of a better word, hipsters. Yuppies are Professionals. That's not who's blowing the light with his dreadlocks flapping in the wind.

It isn't the yuppies, it's the annoying hipsters who come from outside New York and have no idea how to repect the law of the road or the sidewalk.

They almost hit me when I cross the streets (with the walk sign). I've had some very close calls.

Brian from Crown Heights says:
Its amazing that bicycles are associated with "yuppies." Bicycles are inexpensive to buy, own and repair. They offer extremely convenient, free, transportation around the entire city. They cost nothing to park. They are hands-down the MOST logical choice of transportation for any adult who is poor in New York. Possibilites for bike trailers and seats even offer options for those with children which, while not 'cheap' are exponentially cheaper than automobiles. Bicycles are probably the least expensive form of transportation in New York, but here are only the property of "yuppies." The only drawback to biking in New York, aside from lunatic glue lockers, is automobile traffic. The city would be a far more liveable place if more people realized that they would be wealthier, not to mention healthier and happier, if they got rid of their car and rode a bicycle.

@fatimah:

"They don't stop at red lights."
A 2009 study of NYC cyclists by Hunter College found 38% of cyclists don't stop at red lights.

"They ride against traffic."
Only 10% of NYC cyclists in the study rode against traffic.

"Yuppie biksters"
Only 39% of the cyclists in Bed-Stuy in a NYC DOH study were white. Plenty of people bike because they can't afford the rising cost of transit... not just to make a statement.

So, who are the "THEY" you speak of? A fraction of all cyclists, in all cases. I believe that's called stereotyping.

It is illegal to block the sidewalk but do tyhe police or anyone else do anything about it. Why doesn't the city put bike racks in the park where there is more room? There seems to be no rules regarding life in Brooklyn. Bikes are a minor issue. There is blaring music, vomiting and urinating on our homes, and the worst yet is roof hoping. You have people walking on the roofs in the middle of the night. Isn't the roof part of your home? Isn't that tresspassing. I've called the police and they respond but there are so many people up on the roof they can't take them all in. You try to get help the proper way and get none so I don't blame GLUEMAN for taking matters into his own hands. Marla from Williamsburg says:
The issue here is not cars vs. bikes. As GENE, noted: NYC has long been a green city with most of its residents taking public transportation to school and to work. We didn't need the midwesterners to teach us about being green!

However, The bike vigilante is only expressing something that many of the residents of WB feel these days: the city, from the mayor to the sanitation commissioner, has turned its back on the people who made this neighborhood what the newcomers love -- a nice place for families, away from the filth and bustle of Manhattan. Now we simply have Manhattan in Brooklyn. People are fed up because no one listens.
Why doesn't the city put bike racks near all the subway stations? We were told that the bikes tied to street poles and mailboxes are illegal and we were advised to cut the locks and toss the bikes aside. Because we share the common decency that built this community we haven't done that. LET THE CITY DO SOMETHING TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. SEND THE ARTICLE TO YOUR COMMUNITY BOARD REPRESENTATIVES AND TELL THEM YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!

Marla said - "Why doesn't the city put up bike racks near the subway stations?"

Um, because you would complain about the sidewalk being permanently obstructed by embedded objects, and about how the city was spending your taxpayer money on the "yuppies."

If a pole can serve a dual use as both a signpost and a bike rack, I actually think that's more bang for the buck. We're in a budget crisis I've heard. Genuinely constructive ideas are always appreciated though.

And who exactly told you that bikes locked to street poles under a week were illegal?
Aug. 11, 2010, 1:04 pm
gene from williamsburg says:
Marla, you seem to be the only person left in Brooklyn besides me and members of my family who know that bikes on poles are illegal. As my sister points out, if you ask these nice "kids" not to put the bike on your sidewalk they get infuriated and curse at elderly people and tell you you don't own the sidewalk. Here's a little ifo for all you jaskasses who don't know the deal, when your sidewalk is cracked and in need of repair, the city fines you and YOU at YOUR EXPENSE have to replace it. It costs a few thousand dollars. So yes, the sidewalk is the homeowners. In Idaho and wherever else you come from, you don't have sidewalks, so I don't expect you to know this.

PS GarrettThe police and Community Board will tell you that you have a legal right to remove the bike from the pole on your property and dispose of it. Why don't you do some research, I bet you have lots of time on your hands

ONLY??? Whats "only" is the 12% of Bed Stuy residents who are white, according to the Furman Center's 2008 study, a huge increase over the 1.4% of neighborhood residents who were white according to the 2000 Census. This means overwhelming white gentrification and whites biking at a rate more than three times the community average.

Aug. 11, 2010, 2:45 pm
Rabbi Buddy Booth from Eretz Brooklyn says:
No Chris, Fatimah didn't say "ALL cyclists run red lights" she said "Bicyclists don't obey traffic laws", and your stat of "38% of cyclists don't stop at red lights" supports her statement, but not your misinterpretation.
If 38% of Iraqis were killing Americans, it would be fair, in common usage, to say "Iraqis are killing Americans", but it would be incorrect to interpret it, as you did with Fatimah, to say "All Iraqis are killing Americans."

Fatimah didnt say "ALL cyclists are Yuppies." She said "Hit the yuppie biksters in their pocketbooks." You counter with "Only 39% of the cyclists in Bed-Stuy in a NYC DOH study were white." There is nothing in that statistic that rules out the possibility that all 38% of cyclists who run lights (assuming that stat holds for Bed Stuy) were indeed yuppie scum. So unless you have a breakdown of bike scofflaws broken down by yupiiehipster scum vs normal people, your are wrong to say you proved her wrong.

So no, Cupcake, your statistics did NOT "prove her wrong." They DID prove that you are not quite sure what statistics are, or how to use them. They don't teach that in fingerpainting class, I guess.

Making blanket statements like "bicyclists don't obey traffic laws" isn't going to help get us there, because it's simply not true. Fatimah's statement INFERS that ALL bicyclists don't obey traffic laws. Even if she had said, "MOST bicyclists don't obey traffic laws," she would have been wrong.

Rabbi Buddy Booth,

Riding a bike through a red light is the equivalent of firing a loaded gun? You've clearly lost your mind.

More cold, hard statistics: guns kill hundreds of New Yorkers every year. One pedestrian has been killed by a cyclist in New York in the past three years.

I'm not defending these scofflaws, but you need to stop and put things into perspective. There are much more serious problems plaguing our neighborhoods than some inconsiderate cyclists.

Rabbi Buddy Booth from Eretz Brooklyn says:
Chris--"Riding a bike through a red light is the equivalent of firing a loaded gun? You've clearly lost your mind. "

Look vontz, pay attention. No one said they were equivalent, did they. Huh? No they didn't. We are discussing drawing conclusions and making inferences based on statistics.

This article, Mr Genius, IS ABOUT INCONSIDERATE CYCLISTS that have pissed off one righteous member of the community. Resorting to non-sequitors about gun violence and "there are more serious problems than inconsiderate cyclists bla bla" shows that you have a short attention span and probably the ADHD that most hipsters do, but doesn't add anything.

You certainly suggested it. You stated that the community reaction to a large amount of gunfire should be the same as the community reaction to people running red lights on bikes. You made a very clear comparison. You can back off of it, but you cannot deny you connected the two.

And it's funny that you think this article is about inconsiderate cyclists. Did you read it? I'm pretty sure it was about a misanthropic vandal who is destroying people's personal property.

My my my Chris, what a sick and pathetic retarded bike freak you are.

Such syndrome.

You bike freaks wanna turn this into more BS when it is simply about you freaks being bat sh*t crazy and annoying. It has nothing to do with who obeys traffic laws or bikes versus cars....DUH. This is really aboout your self righteous, self entitled STANK ASS attitude, which has turned the people of Brooklyn against you.

Just listen to you: "Cycling will continue to increase whether you like it or not"

How paranoid. Really, bike freaks, how to you arrive at *that*conclusion? No one ever took an anti bike position.

JUST AN ANTI-BIKE FREAK position. JUST AN ANTI-BIKE POLLUTION POSITION. JUST AN ANTI YUP/HIPSTER F**CKFACE POSITION. These have more to do with being YOU BIKE FREAKS BEING anti-social and narcissistic than to do with actual bike riding.

Now, being such a scary bike freak you went and got people mad at you. THEY ARE SICK OF YOU NOW. So now YOU ASSH**LES are the target. NOT BIKE RIDING.

Too much syndrome has impaired your thinking. You should see a shrink.

Better start carrying some acetone with you. BUt, really how would you get the acetone way up in the lock? Dissolving krazy glue with acetone isn't as easy as it sounds and guess what bike freaks ACETONE IS TOXIC, especially the volume needed to dissolve KG!!!!!! And, if my man does it rite, he's really using epoxy.

It is NOT illegal to attach your bike to public street fixtures such as no parking signs, parking meters (MTA fixtures another story).
Prove me wrong. Whats the law or ordinance!?
Sloppy reporting by the publisher.

And so when I see a car double parked I can go seal the locks too-- great society we're going towards...

Aug. 11, 2010, 7:15 pm
I Killed Josh! from Mateo are you a BIKE FREAK TOO? says:
Hmmmmmm Mateo,

I think our society started going down hill when all these bike freaks came to Brooklyn with their sick, sick paranoid dellusions.

How is it that these sickos whine about *their* personal property when a huge percentage of them ABONDON these bikes.

How is it that these sickos whine about vandalism but the bike freaks repainted the bike lanes they *lost* in WB? It cost the city alot of money. What about all those hairy, ugly bike freaks that insist on riding around NAKED....good god!!! VISUAL POLLUTION.

THe legality of attaching your bike to public fixtures is not the issue. WHY YOU SICKOS INSIST ON DOING IT AND ABANDONING YOUR BIKES THERE is the question.

The sanity of bike freaks, who think they are saving the planet from certain destruction when in reality they have fallen for a sad fixie ad campaign...IS the question.

Mateo ARE YOU A BIKE FREAK?

Chris from East Village says:
I find it hilarious that you called me a hipster while I sat in my office in a suit. I am not a hipster, I don't befriend hipsters, and I despise hipsters. Just like I argued: not all cyclists are hipsters. Some are actually productive members of society who volunteer for community organizations (including helping to lead an effort to educate cyclists on the very laws you complain about) and support local businesses.

But no, go ahead, keep persisting with your stereotyped delusions. I'm a hipster simply because I ride a bike.

Get a life, people.

Cycledrama from Crown Heights says:
Maybe next week we'll see the Brooklyn Paper reporting on-- "A longtime neighborhood resident has gotten so frustrated by double-parked cars that he has actually begun smashing windows as a form of vigilante injustice."

Or, perhaps --

"A longtime neighborhood resident has gotten so frustrated by constantly jaywalking pedestrians he has actually begun robbing them as a form of vigilante injustice.... 'If I get the right people together, we will go down Jay Street at 4 pm and rob jaywalkers of their belongings,' said the vigilante, whom we’re calling 'The Street Crusader.'"

Think we'll see the Brooklyn Paper preserving the anonymity of these criminals? Oh, but someone taking the (ridiculously minimal) law into their own hands by destroying property is OK when it comes to bikes. Or maybe when it comes to yuppies. Whatever. All that matters is that the Brooklyn Paper manages to wrap both complete hypocrisy and criminal conspiracy together in one dirty rag!

Jacki from Bushwick says:
This guy is a tool, and will be caught eventually.

I think people are losing focus on the issue. The point is, this guy is deciding that taking the law into his own hands by breaking the law. That's wrong. Just like if we all decided to slash tires of double parked cars in Brooklyn, which I, personally, think is a much bigger problem in Brooklyn, with it's traffic and narrow roadways.

So, that's bad. This guy is again, a tool. He needs to be severely beaten and made to reimburse the money to anyone whose bike lock he's destroyed. Then the law can do whatever they want to him.

A separate issue is what drove him to destroy other people's property - a crowded bike area. THAT needs to be taken up with the city planning agency so than a plan of action can be developed that will be beneficial to everyone. It's obvious bike usage exploded faster than anyone could have imagined or planned for, and therefore the city was unprepared to have to deal with it as a transportation/space issue on such a large scale. So, it's going to take some time. Talk to your community boards and git her dun.

I am so pissed at the way this paper is portraying the a-hole. If I find my lock glued, I will call the police and tell them that this paper knows who did it, and they even glorify him as a crusader.

1. Abandoning your motorcycle like a discarded toy.
2. Ranting like a sick and depraved FREAK that you are saving the planet from certain environmental disaster.
3. Acting like a narcissistic ASSH_LE.

THESE ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIORS are the reason sick bike freaks get targeted. Im sure you are respectful to others and know how to live harmoniously in an urban environment.

FOR THE REST OF YOU SICKOs

I guess I really got you SICK BIKE FREAKS scared!

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHhaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Stupid bike freaks.

This is exactly what happens when BIKE FREAKS get cornered by their own retarded thinking.

LOOOOK AT THEM. All they can resort to is name calling and pissy little hate comments. None of them on here can make a logical argument that is actually relevant to this story. Instead they all turn into psycho-nazis threatening the reporter and anybody who touches their precious little bikes. BUT IF THOSE BIKES ARE SO F-ING IMPORTANT, MOVE THEM INSIDE YOUR APARTMENTS.

As I said before: YOU BIKE FREAKS ARE BAT SH*T CRAZY and need a few weeks in Bellevue for psychiatric observation. There is a clinical trial for a new anti-psychotic going on a Columbia Presbytarian...you can get in on it for free....RIDE YOUR BIKES OVER THERE.

You bike fascists are kind of full of yourselves if you think you can do whatever you want with your bikes. Therefore, if you can't be responsible with them, you don't deserve to have them. It's a privilege, not a right.

Do you naieve people really think more bike racks or parking will solve this problem????

YOU ARE WRONG.

WHY?

Because these bike freaks are BAT SH*T crazy. The only thing that will happen is their anti social behavior will escalate. More and more and more bikes will be abandoned in the proposed bike parking spaces. Giving in to a psychotic's dellusions will only reinforce and escalate them.

THe real problem is their dellusions. They are not saving the planet. Reverting back to 19th Century will not solve the pollution or global warming problems.

This is not about cars v. bikes.

It is a social issue and these bike freaks need to learn how to peacefully co-exist with everyone in brooklyn. BIKE FREAKS DO NOT OWN THE SIDEWALKS.

Check out this website:

mattw from utah says:
So, I'm not from Brooklyn, and but reading a lot of these comments, I just end up wondering: if the bikes are really "abandoned", why not do what they do with cars in limited-time spaces? someone comes along and marks it in some non-permanent way, and if they come back after an interval and it is in the same place (as the marking would indicate), they remove it? I'm sure someone would be willing, under the auspices of the city, to come along and remove bikes with bolt cutters and sell them if they were really abandoned.

If it's just a lot of bikes in use that are parked all over, it seems like that's a good thing. Less traffic congestion, less trouble for the environment. If the problem is that you can't walk around them because they're so tightly packed, why not mark off a couple walkways and simply remove bikes that violate the "walk paths" so people can get through?

Just curious.

That is all that matters.

The REAL IKJ! from BIKE FREAKS are BAT SH*T CRAZY says:
Dear Mattw,

Bikes ARE abandoned probably every neighborhood in Brooklyn is now littered with these abandoned rusted out bikes discarded by a bike freak. In WB it is probably x100000000000 more intense than anywhere else.

Unfortunately NYC is facing a huge budget crisis. Also, NYC is really not that efficient when it comes to sh*t like this. People probably complain and complain but there aren't enough resources to cater to these bike freaks. But really, why should NYC pay for that, when the answer is simple: BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BIKES.

Apparently there is some mythical bike organization out there that is removing, rehabilitating and redistributing these abandoned bikes, but it seems like they aren't even making a dent. Seriously, there are TWENTY abandoned rusted out POS bikes in front of my building that have been there for 2 YEARS.

I don't think you understand the proportions we are dealing with. Irresponsible, psychotic bike freaks pose their own problems. And NONE OF THESE SICKOS want to own up to them. So, NO! MORE BIKE IS NOT GOOD FOR US when its sicko bike freaks being disrespectful to the community. If they would be more aware and respectful and get off their GD soapbox and actually LISTEN to the community, the good people of Brooklyn would work with them.

But NO, they act like some bike freak Nazis, doing whatever and whenever they want with their bikes So, NO! more bikes isn't always a good think when irresponsible bat sh*t crazy bike freaks are involved.

Nice job Brooklyn Paper, you're now an accessory to vadalism. Way to be to be legitimate reporters.

This guy is a straight up ——. So some person takes a bike to run an errand, locks his bike up on the sidewalk, and then comes back to see that he no longer can get to his bike without destroying a $100 chain (if it can even be broken). So he somehow deserves this because this douchebag has a problem with too many bikes. Give me a break! This isn't a vigilante, this is a classic definition of a narcissistic —— who is a drag on communities. I really like your paper, but after this article, I have to question my previous judgement. As I said earlier to another bike freak : Why do you assume I DO NOT RIDE A BIKE? The dif is that I AM SANE AND NORMAL. I do not suffer from bike freak syndrome like you do, thus I do not go around bragging that I am a bike rider....DUH...See you bike freaks really do think you have some special status....WRONG.

Wow, Big DOODIE, it seems to me like G-d has afflicted you twice: first, with mental illness and second with mental retardation.

@Neil - "someone needs to explain slowly and carefully how krazy gluing a locked lock in order to force the removal of a bike is counterproductive."

The way you phrased this, it doesn't follow your previous statement. Basically, you're stating that it's *NOT* counterproductive to glue locked bikes (deeming the bikes immobile, therefore creating more of a problem). Even though it *isn't* counterproductive, I'm not sure that's what you meant to say.

Krazy glue bikes.
People fear their bikes being vandalized.
People take measures to protect their bikes and do so in an organized, reasonable manner.
No more bikes in places where there shouldn't be bikes.
No more bike vandalism.

Uh, wouldn't the answer to all this be more proper bike parking? The logic that it's the bikers fault is flawed. If we were to follow his logic, then once all legal means of bike parking were exhausted, then bikes should be left at home, and bikers should either walk, drive, or use public transit.

Shouldn't instead the demand be met with increased capacity instead of punishing people for practicing a societal, environmental, and physiological good behaviour?

Check it out guys, the good news is that super glue doesn't actually bond well to metal, it's just hanging out in the lock because the keyhole provides a nice little crevasse for it to pool into. So, with a little cyanoacrylate debonder (should be sold in hobby or art stores along with the super glue) you should be able to loosen up the glue enough to shove a key in and unlock your bike. Just don't inhale too much while you're applying the debonder because that stuff fumes up something awful.

A) Blame bicyclists.
B) Blame motorists for creating an insatiable and unsustainable demand for foreign oil. OR
C) Like the Darwin-defying Crusader, do you say, "My limited mental capacity is unable to connect my gas-guzzling lifestyle to the major environmental, economic and military problems affecting our country. Besides, I like cars, so it's OK to destroy clean transportation vehicles."

You bike freaks brought this on yourselves and the people of Brooklyn have rejected your childish behavior. Again, you sickos seem like a broken record, WHAT DO CARS HAVE TO DO WITH IT? NOTHING.

This is 100% about your sick narcisisstic behavior. You are not saving the planet. You cannot ALWAYS get your way. There are other people in Brooklyn WHO DO NOT SHARE YOUR SICK AND TWISTED POV.

Be respectful to people whether or not they ride bikes or drive cars or are in a wheelchair. This is why YOU HAVE BEEN Targeted...becuase you are AS*HOLES.

Yes! bikes are fun and good exercise but that's it people. Just ride them in harmony. Bikes will NOT end this oil war. More cars did NOT CAUSE THIS OIL WAR. All the abandoned bikes are actually CAUSING POLLUTION and turning our neighborhoods UGLY.

I Killed Josh! from his mom's basement says:
If you Google my handle "I Killed Josh!" you'll see that I'm nothing more than a lonely, frustrated, miserable, sex-less internet troll that literally spends ALL his time leaving juvenile comments all over the internet...not only on this site, but you'll find pages and pages of my antics all over the internet. Jerking off all day just doesn't cut it, so this is what I do for personal kicks and excitement.

Mr. Sacamano from Greenpoint says:
I have rode my bike as a kid into adulthood for years through these city streets without any problems. Never made demands for ridiculous bike lanes, never complained about cars and pedestrians. In fact, many people rode bikes, for recreation, for transportation. It's a normal mundane activity that we all enjoyed.

But fast forward to this era of hipster/yuppie sickness, and once again, these miserable worms take a normal mundane activity (bike riding, drinking coffee, making music, schtupping, gardening, eating, finding a place to live, dressing oneself, breathing) and turn it into A BIG EFFIN DRAMA. And, they act like, and believe, in their infinite cretinousness, that they are the first ones to have ever ridden a bike, planted a vegetable, played music, drank coffee, rented an apartment had some sex or EVEN BREATHED, and that WE should praise them for it. And not only that, somehow EVERY ONE of these mundane activities winds up either tripling in price or simply degraded beyond recognition as a human activity. Not only are they screaming LOOK AT ME MOMMY, they are making us pay for it in cash, quality of life and sanity.

Lack of respect for people in the neighborhood who have been bombarded with this bike nonsense brought on by these self-absorbed transplants who can't handle owning a bike in the city is a big part of the problem. The whiney nasal squawking emanating from this comments section makes me wanna send this guy a case of Krazy Glue.

beartoe from ellicott city says:
Prevent a$$holes like this from the glue trick by simply squirting a healthy glob of grease (I like the white moly grease kind) into your bike lock's keyhole about once a week. It can't be cleaned out, it will prevent superglue from working, and it keeps your lock from rusting.

StedyRuckus from Bed-Stizzle says:
Every single person on this thread is a moron.

Anyone who defends the bike lock glue head is an idiot.

Anyone trashing transplants to NYC has no sense of their own city's history.

Anyone trashing bicyclists is a moron too. I grew up in Brooklyn, and have been riding my bike to get around since i was 10 years old. Its simple, and convenient, and in case you haven't noticed there is no fast and efficient way to get around from neighborhood to neighborhood in Brooklyn.
There is no holier than thou sense of entitlement. People who ride bikes as a means of transportation would most likely use public transit as an alternative. Its just nice to ride your bike. Plus, how does one get from Bed Stuy to Park Slope? You can take 4 buses, 3 trains walk for 40 minutes, or just hop on your bike and ride for 10 minutes.

Seriously, they are just bikes.

Oliver from Gramercy says:
LOL anti bike guy is mad at both bikes parked on the sidewalk and the cities attempt to alleviate congestion by adding to the existing inventory of bike parking.

This is typical of the cognitive disconnect of righties evidenced by their ability to cling to multiple oppositional beliefs concurrently.

Unfortunately rather than causing their heads to explode, it merely increases their rage and feelings of impotence.

Lenny from B.Ridge says:
If I catch you, I'll crazy glue your hand to your nether parts!! That's really bright! Glue the locks so the bikes can't be moved!Alotta deep thought there dummy!
Aug. 16, 2010, 3:44 pm
Steven from Bay Ridge says:
It's just astounding to think that a newspaper would give a forum to such a
reactionary lunatic in it's pages while allowing him to brag about crimes
he has already committed and describe his plans to commit more. You'd think
that would leave the newspaper open to some sort of liability or complicity
in the acts of the criminal imbecile.

The anti-bicycle sentiment that is brewing in the corporate media is just
amazing. If someone glued the locks of a bunch of swinemobile SUV's they'd
be labeled an "eco-terrorist" and be subjected to fast federal prosecution.
Attack us cyclists and you get to publicly pat yourself on the back and
proudly confess to your crimes in a "so-called" newspaper while walking free.

Don't take this crap, kids. Start carrying acetone (nail-polish remover)...dissolves super-glues. Be glad you don't live in LA, where our biggest worry isn't glued locks, it's speeding SUVs

Manco from Brooklyn says:
Bicyclists in WB are for the most part jerks but yeah this guy is going about it all wrong. This guy should move to Holland he would have a field day if he could find a locked bike.

GI Joey from Styv says:
Krazy glue?!?! You a-holes should be thankful that he's going lightweight by just messing with your locks. I think a heavy dose of some bulk Pepper spray on those seats and handlebars would be the way to go! That'd be cool as hell. Once you cut the lock off your eyesore of a bike just to sit on the seat and get your genitals caught on fire! Or how about some slashed tires, broken chains and warped handle bars? Try riding that trash on the streets when your pedals suddenly disappear. There are so many ways to get you stupid cyclist off the road! Krazy glue? You ain't seen nothing, yet! Krazy Crusader is a kind and gentle soul when compared to me.
Aug. 26, 2010, 3:04 pm
GI Joey from Styv says:
Pepper spray those seats and handle bars! Snap those chains and remove pedals! Tire slashing, anyone? I'm all for idea of putting all the dirty needles I find into the cushioning of a bike seat! Hepatitis anyone? Run them over with a monster truck! Spike strips? Screw it! It's faster to slash a bike tire than to uncap a Krazy glue bottle. Now you stupid cyclist can feel the burden of having to carry a bike home on your shoulders!

Mfresh from ProspHeights says:
i understand this persons frustration but instead of taking a hand on approach why not speak to the DOS? and regulate bikes that have been parked for xx amount of time. truthfully speaking if i were to catch this person mistakenly gluing my lock i would remove such lock and beat him with it. your really have no right touching anyone else's —— especially if its not OBSTRUCTING anyones path. lets see you trying to insert crazy glue into someones double parked car @ 4am you coward!

James from Willyburg says:
Most of the bikers here, can't even afford cars. So they act all high and mighty, about how's it healthy and is cleaner. When in reality they give about as much —— as the people driving cars. Most bikers are pussies anyway, so please try to get into a fight with a vandal.

@JackEsavage:
real Brooklynites call them Hipsters, Hipster douches, Fauxhemians... they have many names and are hated by all! They move to Brooklyn because of how cool it is and then want to change everything! Instead of learning how to ride a bike like a real Brooklynite.(With cars) They can' afford cars so they're jealous! they just use pollution as an excuse. I got a bunch of these idiots that moved into the house next door to me and now their front yard looks like a graveyard for rusty piece of —— pee-wee herman bikes! They use dirty old sheets to cover their windows. Pigs!
